Christmas fair Mayow Park Copy_0

Tree dressing is the ancient & global art in which a community celebrate or commemorate something of importance to them by decorating a carefully selected tree & holding some kind of event nearby. Whether the tree is dressed with flags in Shropshire, rags in Ireland, fruit in India, red ribbons in Turkey, clothes & jewellery in Siberia or bottles in the South of France it is both a visually striking & memorable event. It would help us if you could bring any special scraps of fabric, coloured leaves, berries, paper, ribbon and glue with you.

Envirowork will be organising a Christmas Fair between 11am and 4pm in their depot, (just behind the Pavilion) with Father Christmas, a local choir and market stalls. Come and talk to Envirowork about their exciting plans to create a Community Garden in this wonderful historic park. Admission is free.

If you would like a stall or are a local who wants to help out, please contact enviroworklewisham@gmail.com

Work started on the Bowling Club Accommodation

Work has started on Bowling Club Accommodation

This week, work has started on the new Clubhouse for the Mayow Park Bowls Club. The following text is a message from Glendale:

  • The initial work will be setting up and securing the works site and disconnecting existing services and relocation of the container to the yard area.
  • Removal of small self set trees and shrubs and minor pruning to one Prunus (Cherry Tree) to allow access, will follow.
  • Construction of the new build will then commence along with the construction of the top surface to allow for the containers to be lifted onto site.
  • The pathway running along the top side of the Bowling Green will be closed for a short period to allow for excavation for sewerage connections. Diversion signs, etc. will be in place during this time.
  • The works are anticipated to last for a period of 6 weeks and finish before Christmas.

Disruption will be kept to a minimum during these works and your co-operation is gratefully appreciated. In case of emergency or if you require any information, please call Glendale Grounds Management on 020 8318 3986.

Childrens Fun Fair

This August local children were treated to an unexpected Fun Fair in Mayow Park. Unaware to FOMP or indeed most of Glendale staff in the office in early August, posters appeared around the park advertising the event. Despite only a week’s notice and the posters describing a Beckenham Place Park venue, it seemed well attended on both days I visited the park that weekend.

Picnic in Mayow Park

The picnic attracted some odd characters!

The picnic attracted some odd characters!

On the afternoon of Sunday 12th July, the Sydenham Arts Festival celebrated it’s last day with a Picnic in Mayow Park. The park was filled with families and groups of people carrying their deckchairs, rugs and food ready to enjoy a whole afternoon of free entertainment. Organised by Juliette Grassby-Lewis, the Assistant Festival Director, the afternoon kicked off with South London’s Premier Brass Band from Crystal Palace playing a medley of tunes for an hour. Soon after, the Mayor of Lewisham Steve Bullock made a rousing speech on local community events in which the Sydenham Arts Festival clearly excelled. This was followed by the Sydenham Arts Festival Poet in Residence, Gale Burns and friends reading some of their work, including a newly created Festival poem. At 2:30, the Children’s Theatre began with a somewhat modern version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears! We were then entertained with a variety of Live Music, Salsa Line Dancing, Future Folk music and finishing off with the Lewisham Youth Choir singing a medley of songs about London.

While all this was happening, there was plenty to do for the whole family – TeachSport provided free sports equipment for under 5’s – sack races, hurdles and tennis to name a few. There was even face painting, butterfly creating and even a puppet show! It was a great day enjoyed by all.

Photo 0424Photo 0419The recent hot weather encourages groups of drinkers in the park – but why do they always use the young children’s playground? These photos were taken Monday morning at 9:30am. Litter included alcopop bottles, beer cans and loads of carrier bags. There were members of Glendale in the park, but they were more concerned about strimming grass by the tennis courts! I spoke to a couple of mothers with toddlers who were put off entering the play area and we spoke about the general poor maintenance. They had both attended the consultation with members from Lewisham’s GreenScene in November as concerned park users, but a report has yet to be produced. This is a big issue for parents and grandparents using the area along with lack of toilet facilities. We’re hoping that scenes like this after a hot weekend will be rare once a Park-Keeper is re-instated….

Young People’s Consultation Report

The ‘Have your Say on Mayow Day’ event was organised by Friends of Mayow Park, Lewisham’s Green Scene and Glendale, with support from the Young Mayor’s office.

Braving the strong winds and driving rain, a number of young people came during the course of the day to suggest equipment and express preferences using the photos of equipment on the display boards. Some also chose to take part in the sporting activities just outside the marquee, which were organised by sports coaches from Teach Sport. Refreshments were available to all young people who participated in the consultation.

Visitors were able to draw, make models, try a word-search and write suggestions of what they would and would not like in the new older children’s zone. Entries for the competition to design-a-sign and name-the-space showed originality and creativity. A winner for the IPod Nano will be chosen after the competition finishes on 15th June 2009.

Thank you to everyone who attended….

Young People’s Consultation

If you’re a regular Mayow Park user, you may have seen the new posters advertising this consultation for 10-14 year olds, to give them a voice in developing their own area within the Park.

On Wednesday 27th May between 11am and 3pm (in Half Term) there will be a marquee with activities and a competition to name the area with a ipod nano prize. We are interested to hear ideas and suggestions from any 10-14yr olds. Older and younger children can come and watch too – there will be coaches from Teach Sport providing free games.

The event will be run by Friends of Mayow Park, Lewisham’s Green Scene and Glendale, with support from some young people from the Young Mayor’s Office.

10.00 am – 1.00 pm, Saturday 16 May in the Pavillion.

Plans for a new facility for the Mayow Park bowls club have been received by Lewisham’s planning department and are now out for consultation. There will be an exhibition of these proposals in the pavilion on the morning of Saturday 16th May, with officers on hand to answer questions. We hope that as many people as possible will visit the park to look at the proposals and talk to Council staff.
